FAQ

What is Voop and what does it do?

Voop is the UK's first digital safeguarding solution for children in foster and residential care. It combines a SIM, on-device controls, and a device management platform, giving care teams control over who a child can contact, what content they can access, and how their device behaves. Protections run at network level, so they can't be bypassed. Controls are tailored to each child's individual care plan, giving those with parental responsibility the right tools for every young person in their care.

How is Voop different from other digital safeguarding tools?

Most parental control tools sit at the app or device layer. Children who have been in the care system know how to remove them. Groomers know this too. Voop's protections are enforced at network level, so VPNs, factory resets, and SIM swaps can't bypass them. And unlike consumer parenting tools, Voop was built specifically for the legal, relational, and operational realities of looked-after children

Does Voop need a Deprivation of Liberty order (DoLS) or to be named in the care order?

No. Voop operates within existing consent frameworks and does not require a Deprivation of Liberty order or amendment to a care order. Independent legal opinion supports this position. Every feature is designed to meet the legal triple test of legality, necessity, and proportionality that applies to any intervention involving a looked-after child. Settings are intended to be agreed with the child and their care team, not imposed unilaterally.

What involvement have young people had in the design of Voop?

Voop was co-designed from the outset with Compass Community and independently validated through co-creation research with Kids Industries across 34 children aged 8-16 in three care settings, spanning residential homes and foster families. Young people were involved in shaping features, testing the experience, and configuring what protections felt appropriate to them. The research found near-universal acceptance when Voop was introduced transparently and children were given genuine involvement in setting their own parameters.

How does Voop keep young people safe?

Voop keeps young people safe by combining controls at the network level with controls on a young person’s smartphone, all contained within a single easy-to-use platform for guardians and carers. The platform uses these controls to filter content the smartphone can access, manage contacts that young people can communicate with, track locations and block certain features on the device like the camera.

What types of contacts and communications can I block through Voop?

You can block anyone from calling or texting a young person through Voop. You will receive an alert to your dashboard if a young person attempts to contact, or be contacted by, someone you have blocked. These calling and texting settings only apply to the smartphone’s native calling and texting apps, not to third party apps like Snapchat and WhatsApp (which you can block entirely).
